Provender CC v BB

July 3, 2016

BB won by 2 wickets

In what has been a wet fish of a summer the BB were blessed with warm sunshine and a glorious Kentish day as they took the field against Provender, having been invited to bowl first. This suited the Brethren perfectly as the eleven boasted the finest fast bowling attack the club has to offer in the form of Richardson, Monkhouse and the Meredith brothers. A slight mix up in the team attributes forced the skipper, Regan to don the gloves, but the weak link behind the stumps proved irrelevant as Richardson struck in the very first over, removing Piesley, a former Kent academy player. 0-1. The elder Meredith brother, Harry, fuelled by a desire to perform in front of his girlfriend, struck immediately as well. A peach of an in cutter went straight through the openers defences to castle the stumps, 0-2.

The remainder of the Provender innings was an extraordinary affair of extravagant shot selection and reckless running. Meredith struck again in his first spell and Richardson bowled tightly to restrict the hosts. This was compounded by an amateur piece of cricket from the Provender number 5 who was run out after failing to return to his crease as the ball trickled to gully, where James Wilkes-Green struck the stumps directly. At 4 down by the time the change bowlers came on Provender would hope for some respite, but this was not forthcoming. Will Meredith bowled excellent lines and was rewarded with 2 wickets, and McClean (guest) bowled economically with his off-spin to frustrate the hosts, who rewarded the brethren with another reckless piece of running, James Wilkes-Green striking directly again. Some stubborn resistance down the order was broken by an excellent Monkhouse, who removed the captain, and 2 wickets for 16 year old Alex Moen, a fine prospect for the future. Provender were all out for 91.

Lunch was the usual excellent affair from our generous host, Graham Smith but I fear it slightly put the BB at ease as the chase of such a modest total was not as convincing as one would like. James Wilkes-Green and Pollington, another junior started solidly in the face of some aggressive opening bowling, seeing the BB off to a decent start before Pollington was caught at mid-off. Shelley (guest) started well at 3 but was unable to capitalise on his start courtesy of a dubious LBW decision. Wilkes-Green played beautifully for his 27 before being dismissed unfortunately after a regulation defensive shot saw the ball back spin onto his stumps. This saw Joffy Wilkes-Green come to the wicket and take the game to Provender, mercilessly hitting their wrist spinner out of the attack before another questionable LBW saw him back into the pavilion. This bought McClean to the crease to join Moen and together they played solidly to sooth the nerves and threatened to take the game away from Provender. However the only guarantee in cricket is that a low score is always followed by a low score and the quick dismals of Moen, Harry Meredith and Richardson, the latter to a superb one-handed boundary catch, threatened to leave the brethren on the wrong side of 91. This was further compounded by McClean, who had played so solidly, being dismissed to another excellent catch at point, leaving BB at 76-8. However the game had one further twist to its tale and a solid knock from Monkhouse and some hitting from Regan saw the BB home with 2 wickets to spare, just in time for tea.

Our thanks go to Graham and his excellent support at Provender and the BB can be safe in the knowledge that they are now 2-0 in this newly founded fixture.

King School Canterbury vs BB

BB - 165 (43.3 overs)

King’s school - 166 -4 (30.4 overs)

King’s school won by 6 wicket

In stark contrast to last year’s fixture, conditions this year were autumnal with the game played in a state of near constant drizzle and heavy wind. BB decided to have first use of the wicket and after the early loss of both openers Toby Snape (32) and Toby Marriot (29) carefully went about rebuilding the innings with the generous assistance of the King’s fielders. The damage was done either side of lunch with the School reacting to the coaching staff’s hairdryer treatment in spectacular fashion as BB slumped from 98-3 to 134-8. It was left to Johnny Stubbs (23) to eke out some runs from the lower order with BB’s total of 165 feeling somewhat light.

Having successfully defended a similar total in 2015, BB went out hard in pursuit of early wickets only for King’s to get off to an absolute flier with an aggressive and in form top-order making batting look decidedly easy. A couple of wickets for Olly Reynolds helped stem the flow but the damage had been done by the time King’s reached tea at 100-2. BB battled hard in the last session with spirits undeterred by the worsening conditions; however, the school ended up completing a comfortable victory with 6 wickets to spare

Tonbridge School v BB

Saturday, June 04 2016

at Tonbridge School

TONBRIDGE - 241-7 DEC

BB - 241

MATCH TIED

On Tuesday 21st June, a BB side full of youth and experience took to the typically picturesque, Head at Tonbridge School.

Tonbridge won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision which their Captain may have regretted after Finn Hulbert and Jame Monkhouse rattled the Tonbridge top order. At 46-4 Tonbridge were under a lot of pressure to put a target on the board. An interesting decision to bring Brother Hill onto bowl slightly turned the game back towards Tonbridge. Tonbridge then put together 2 or 3 good partnerships and left the BB fighting to stay in the game. At 241-7 Tonbridge declared and on a good Tonbridge pitch, was that point to be enough?

A similar story was written by the BB top order as we slipped to 40-5. However, with the batting power that was still in the hutch, Rosé was poured and no one panicked. Cue Finn Hulbert. Finn’s glorious shotmaking and relentless defiance was the backbone and body of the BB chase. The BB were in total control as both Finn and Toby Marriott put together a superb and match saving partnership of 139. With The BB 226-7 the game was surely wrapped up. With Finn 115 not out and Alex Hill and Alex Cornwallis still to bat, The BB were filled with confidence. As the sun set over the Chapel both Alex’s were swiftly dismissed and the game was firmly back in The School’s hands. 7 to win. 1 wicket to get. Finn hits a 6! 1 run to win. Finn 128 not out. Scores are level…. And that is the way they finished. Finn tries his luck one too many times and puts a steepler down the throat of the Tonbridge captain. Match Tied.

A superb effort from all and a very fitting result to a fantastic day of cricket. We look forward to going back next year and going 1 run further. Thanks to all involved, a game none will forget

Hurlingham CC v BB

Saturday, June 04 2016

at The Hurlingham Club

BB - 302-6 dec

Hurlingham - 217-9

Match Drawn

On a cloudy morning at the Hurlingham, a strong BB XI assembled to take on a youthful home side. The deck had a greener tinge than usual in this idyllic corner of south west London, however big runs were still expected as the BB were asked to bat first after losing the toss.

However big runs looked in danger as a combination of fine bowling, loose strokeplay, and some surprisingly hasty finger-work from the local umpire saw the BB reach a speedily compiled, yet perilous 133-6. As the saying goes though, cometh the hour cometh the men, this time in the shape of Brothers Norwood-Hill and Churchill. A sparkling 7th wicket stand of 169 followed, either side of a rosé fuelled lunch, allowing Brother Bruce to declare on an imposing 302-6, Churchill having just reached an excellent century and Hilly carefully safeguarding his average with 66 red.

The BB took to the field with energy and enthusiasm, and Meredith struck a couple of early blows, finding bounce and movement with the new cherry. A swift half-century from the surviving opener gave the Hurlingham hope of a successful chase, before the #4 made an early, and highly tedious decision to play for the draw. The game looked to be drifting towards a frustrating conclusion with the BB needing 7 wickets with only 9 overs remaining. However the returning Robinson removed the aforementioned limpet, Munton varied flight and pace quickly accounting for a string of victims, and Meredith grabbed another brace, one courtesy of a magnificent catch by stand in ‘keeper Bruce. Sadly, with 10 Brethren crowded round the bat, the final pair clung on for the last nine deliveries and the Hurlingham Club escaped with a draw. Many of the team retired to the bar to discuss the day’s highlights over jugs of pimms, before taking the ill-advised, yet highly enjoyable path onwards to The Ship, and the Clapham Grand.”

CHIEF'S XI v BB XI - inaugural inter BB match

Chief's XI - 187

BB - 188 for 6

BB won by 4 wickets

PUTTING THE JAZZ BACK INTO JAZZ CRICKET!

Thanks so much to Lady Kingsdown for hosting such a super and successful day at Torry Hill yesterday. Huge thanks also to all Brethren, Candidates and Guests that played, contributed and attended this fantastic event, being the inaugural inter BB match!  With 50 excited spectators enjoying the entertainment - the rain held off, the pimms flowed, the food was amazing and the Dixie jazz band played on!  Big thanks also Clare Annand for the amazing catering and bar and Howard Waters for a super wicket and all his invaluable help setting up!

BB narrowly beat the Chief's XI chasing down a tricky 187, losing only 6 wickets along the way. Congrats to Brother Cornwallis on guiding his team to victory and I am sure Brother Bax will seek revenge next year - catches do indeed win matches!

BB vs King's School Rochester

BB 255 - 4 Dec

King's School Rochester 151

BB won by 6 wickets

The BB’s won the toss on a glorious day at the Paddock and chose to bat on a wonderful batting track. We got off to a reasonable start courtesy of brother Jay but then lost 2 wickets in quick succession. The damage was soon rectified by Grayson Jones and Luke Ronday (guests) who set about rebuilding the innings. King’s bowlers faded badly as the inning wore on and runs became very easy to come by. The BB’s declared shortly before tea on 255-4.

The King’s response began well with Tom Miles scoring a very impressive 40 until Julian Mitchell produced a fine spell of swing bowling culminating in 2 lbw’s. Once Miles went the wickets tumbled at regular intervals until such time the final wicket fell at 151. All the bowlers contributed and the fielding was outstanding all day. As usual the school were as hospitable as ever and put on a fine spread. Many of the school players were only in the lower sixth so I expect next year’s fixture to be very competitive!

My thanks go to David Lapthorn and Colin Hill for umpiring and of course to Diane Gittings who is ever present at the fixture with the scorebook.
